SmartLipo LaserBodySculpting Now in Napa & Santa Rosa

Walter W. Tom, MD, FACS
Napa, CA

What is SmartLipo LaserBodySculpting?

LaserBodySculpting is designed for patients who have problem spot areas of fat that no amount of exercise or dieting can reduce. It is for body sculpting; not for large volumes of fat. It is a unique laser procedure that is performed under local anesthesia in Dr. Walter Tom's office. No intravenous sedation or general anesthesia is required.

A small 1 mm in diameter laser fiber is introduced under the skin by a 2 mm blunt needle like cannula. Dr. Tom will gently move the laser fiber back in forth just under the skin. The laser energy will disrupt the fat cells, allowing the then liquefied fat to be drained away. This effect is called Laser Lipolysis.

Because of the laser energy small blood vessels will be sealed off resulting in less bruising and swelling as seen with traditional liposuction. The big advantage of the Smart-Lipo LaserBodySculpting is the skin dermis (deeper skin layer) tightening that occurs due to collagen shrinkage and remodeling by the laser energy.

What body regions can be treated with the SmartLipo LaserBodySculpting?

SmartLipo is ideal for treating small areas of fat or loose skin. It is not a replacement for liposuction. SmartLipo can be used for areas such as your thighs (particularly “Saddle Bags”), hips, abdomen, and flanks (‘Love Handles”), around the bra strap, back of the upper arms, the loose skin under the chin (“Waddle”), and the neck and jaw line.

Who is a good candidate for SmartLipo LaserBodySculpting?

Patients with areas of fat that do not respond to exercise and dieting are candidates. Ideal candidates are in good health, with a normal body weight, and realistic expectations. Females with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of less than 27 are good candidates. In males due to the usually larger muscle mass may slightly have a higher BMI. You can figure your BMI from the chart below:

Body Mass Index Table

A Smart Lipo Candidate should have a BMI of 26 or below.

To use the table, find the appropriate height in the left-hand column labeled Height. Move across to a given weight (in pounds). The number at the top of the column is the BMI at that height and weight. Pounds have been rounded off.

How many treatments will I need?

Usually only one treatment is required as once the fat cells have been destroyed they will not grow back. The SmartLipo LaserBodySculpting will take about 45 minutes to one hour for each treated area.

What is my recovery like post treatment?

A compression garment will be worn from several days up to several weeks. Dr. Tom and the nurses will give you specific instructions depending on the areas treated and your individual situation. You will rest for the remainder of the treatment day then resume activity as tolerated. Neither strenuous exercise nor hot tubs should be used for two weeks.

Does SmartLipo treat cellulite?

SmartLipo LaserBodySculpting may improve the body's shape. In some instances it may improve the appearance of cellulite. The addition of Lumicell anti-cellulite treatments increases the likelihood of cellulite improvement. Lumicell skin treatments will also improve the circulation and lymph drainage of the SmartLipo treated areas.

When are the results visible?

Results can be seen within a week with continued improvement over several months. Additional treatments such as body Thermage may give additional skin tightening benefits.

Are the results of SmartLipo LaserBodySculpting long lasting?

SmartLipo LaserBodySculpting permanently removes fat cells. As adults we do not create new fat cells. However if you do not change your lifestyle in regards to exercise and a healthy diet the remaining fat cell will increase in size. If you gain weight most fat will be deposited in areas where the SmartLipo procedure was not performed.

After graduating from the University of Michigan, Dr. Tom attended medical school at Wayne State University School of Medicine and finished his General and Vascular Surgical Residency at William Beaumont Hospital and his Organ Transplant Fellowship at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Dr. Walter Tom has always been a leader in introducing the latest technology to the North Bay. In 1986, he co-founded the Kidney Transplant program at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital as Chief Surgeon. In the early 1990's he helped to establish laparoscopic minimally invasive abdominal surgery as a mainstay in Sonoma County. Predated by the local medical community's lack of legitimate concern for those with vein disorders, in 1999 Dr. Tom's vision of a dedicated laser and vein center became reality when he created the Aesthetic Laser & Vein Center of the North Bay in Santa Rosa.

At the turn of the century in January 2000, Dr. Tom having trained under Dr. Patrick Bitter, Sr. he introduced Photofacial intense pulsed light therapy to Sonoma County for treatment of facial aesthetic concerns. After extensive research of the emerging technologies Dr. Tom performed the first non-surgical endovenous laser vein ablation in 2003, which has now replaced surgical "vein stripping."

The Aesthetic Laser & Vein Center of Napa was opened in December 2004 to offer these new technologies outside of North Coast California. Now, utilizing sub dermal massage and light "LED" therapy researched by many investigators including NASA, Dr. Tom was the first to introduce the Lumicell Touch cellulite treatment to the North Bay.

Dr. Tom is proud to introduce the staff to the northern California Area. The Santa Rosa center has three RN laser nurse specialist Anita Stevens, Tammy Coleman, and Melanie Valesi. Patient coordinators include Jan Wilmore and Regina Kelly. Lori Fischer the newest addition to the Santa Rosa office is the aesthetic advisor. The Napa office co-founder and managing laser nurse specialist and director of education is Kathy Patten, RN. Recently two new RNs have joined the Napa team Ann Cardaman and Anne Stafford-Wade. Kerri Silva and Kristin Brock serve as the patient coordinators.

Dr. Tom is married with two teen-age children and enjoys hobbies such as music, photography, ice hockey and coaching youth sports.

Dr. Tom is extremely dedicated to providing quality medical care and education to the patients of the Santa Rosa, Napa and surrounding communities.
